The Nor-Khill translates to the House of Jewels. Jewels, here refers to the wealth of the natural beauty on display, the mountains, the valleys, the flowers and the fruits. The flowers and the fruits. The Kanchan Garden used to be a favourite spot of the Chagyal of Sikkim who would set up his easel and paint for hours. Built by the king of Sikkim in 1962, the Nor-Khill served as his royal guest house for receiving Heads of States and dignitaries from the Dalai Lama to Union Ministers and film stars. With traditional artifacts and jewellery, the interiors are done up with ornate thankas or wall hangings, bachu, choscue and other design motifs deemed lucky in the local tradition. The only heritage hotel in Gangtok, the Nor-Khill has 25 rooms each done up in a special way.
