Turuk Kothi was home to the first minter of Sikkim, Laxmi Das Pradhan, and also served as the District Headquarter for many years. Even after over 160 years, the descendants of Laxmi Das Pradhan continue to live in the same house. With well-known hill stations namely, Darjeeling and Kalimpong, neighboring Turuk, the Kothi is a half an hour drive away from Melli Bazaar—the gateway to Sikkim. Melli itself is a two and a half hour drive from Bagdogra, the nearest airport.
