With an area of about 1,166 km. square and population of 1, 23,174 West district lives up to its proverbial name as being wild and free. West Sikkim no doubt is an adventurer’s delight with its undaunted trekking routes and frothing rapids. It is here that Pelling, Yuksam, Kheceopalri, Pemayangtse, Hee-Bermiok, Rinchenpong, Darap and Tashiding the brand names in Sikkim tourism is located. It is the district where a lot of the historical landmarks of ancient Sikkim are found. It served as the capital beginning in 1642 for almost 50 years and these historical landmaks are now prominent tourism sites of interest. There are many activities one can be engaged in: excursions to nearby waterfalls and monasteries, village walks, short monastery hikes,lake excursions, high altitude treks, monastic festivals, river rafting and cultural homestays.
